part of the Eastern Shore Study Away internship program, students were exposed to the Machipongo Almshouse, once a welfare shelter and self sustaining community, now the Barrier Island Center (BIC) museum representing the history of the property and its people.
inspired by objects found within the museum, a motif of expanding bottles was designed, representing the vulnerability, release, and acceptance offered by the Almshouse to newcomers over a century ago. this design was subsequently carved, inked, and block printed on a white cotton sheet.
